About half of U.S. voters deem socialism in a bad light, according to a new poll conducted by The New York Times and Siena University. The effects demonstrate that despite democratic socialists having scored telling victories against the Democratic establishment, the movement remains disliked with most of the nation.
According to a story by Newsmax, the poll discovered that 51% of likely voters said they had a disapproving view of socialism, including 40% who saw it very unfavorably. Thirty-one percent said they had a favorable view, 7% said they had not heard of socialism, and 10% said they did not know or declined to answer.
The survey did not define “socialism” or “democratic socialism” for respondents.
The poll also showed different reactions to two prominent politicians associated with democratic socialism.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., who has been the face of democratic socialism for years, was viewed unfavorably by 41% of likely voters and favorably by 30%. Mamdani, who was elected as mayor of New York City, had a 38% favorable rating and a 33% unfavorable rating.
Roughly 3-in-10 voters either had not heard of the two politicians or did not give an opinion.
Nevertheless, Republicans have stressed socialism as a theme heading into the midterms, although the poll found it was not the leading motivation for most GOP voters.
Still, the poll results come as democratic socialist candidates have nabbed a series of primary victories, especially in heavily Democrat areas. Mamdani, who took office in January, declared in his inaugural address, “I was elected as a democratic socialist, and I will govern as a democratic socialist.”
Democratic Socialists of America-backed candidates also won House primaries this year, including Claire Valdez and Darializa Avila Chevalier in New York and Melat Kiros in Colorado.
