The Justice Department has filed four more lawsuits against three states and Washington, D.C., contesting their programs that offer eligible illegals in-state college tuition benefits the Trump administration says are unlawful.
Filed Thursday, the four lawsuits against D.C. and the states of Hawaii, Arkansas and Utah, bring the total number of challenges against so-called Dream Act policies to 25, according to a story by Newsmax.
The DOJ says the most recent complaints challenge every state or jurisdiction it identifies as having a law or regulation providing in-state tuition to students who are not lawfully present.
In addition, the DOJ added that federal law bans states from making people who are not lawfully present qualified for postsecondary education benefits based on state residency unless U.S. citizens are eligible for the same benefits regardless of where they live.
“No more placing illegal aliens over American citizens on this Department of Justice’s watch,” Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward Jr. said in a statement.
“We look forward to favorable court rulings and will continue to deliver on President [Donald] Trump’s promise: illegal aliens will not receive benefits denied to American citizens.”
Formerly, the DOJ presented cases against Rhode Island, Texas, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Illinois, New Jersey, Maryland, Kansas, California, Minnesota, Virginia, and Massachusetts.
Of those cases, six of them have resulted in court orders blocking the challenged tuition policies, according to the DOJ.
According to the Newsmax story, “those cases include litigation involving Texas, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Illinois, with the department also citing Kansas as having produced a favorable court order. Other cases remain pending in federal court.”
The legal campaign has already resulted in changes to tuition policies in several states.
