Republicans Losing Ground Among Latinos in House Battlegrounds

The GOP and Trump made big inroads among Hispanics in 2024, helping them nab the elections. But now, the tide is turning.

In 2024, Latinos, the group that traditionally favored Democrats, managed to give President Donald Trump the edge to obliterate his rivals in the presidential elections, giving him a ticket to the White House once more.

But now, things have changed, according to a story by Axios. Democrats have made steep inroads with Latino voters in some of the nation’s most aggressive House districts since 2024, a new Hart Research/TelevisaUnivision poll shared exclusively with Axios shows.

During the last presidential election, Trump came close to expunging the longtime advantage among Latinos that Democrats used to take for granted. Now, with control of Congress at stake and Trump’s approval ratings hitting new lows, that breakthrough appears to have corroded.

After the 2024 election, the GOP hoped Trump’s near-parity with Democrats among Latinos in 2024 would consolidate into a lasting political realignment favoring the GOP.

Instead, this poll and surveys earlier this year indicate that the country’s fastest-growing swing electorate is shifting left, as frustration at high prices and Trump’s immigration policies appear to be giving Democrats a fissure.

That marks a striking reversal from 2024, when Trump’s gains with Latino voters helped produce the most racially diverse Republican presidential coalition in decades.

“Latino voters aren’t locked into one party. They’re paying close attention and making decisions based on who shows up for them, and how they’re showing up,” TelevisaUnivision Senior Vice President Kate Coleman tells Axios.

Aileen Cardona-Arroyo, a partner at Hart Research, tells Axios the survey showed Spanish language media is critical for engaging Latino voters in 2026 competitive congressional races.
