Rick Santorum, the former Republican Sen. from Pennsylvania, said on Sunday he is against the President’s plan of handing American citizens a $5,000 check if the GOP manages to keep control of Congress, explaining that this would not only increase inflation but add to the federal debt.
“I’m not a big fan of it,” Santorum said on “Sunday Report,” according to a Newsmax story. “I’m concerned about spending, and this $5,000 check to just randomly give out to people is not going to spur the economy. It’s going to cause inflation.”
Last week, President Donald Trump heralded the intended “Trump dividend” at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas, assuring $5,000 payments to adult U.S. citizens if Republicans keep control of both the House and Senate in November. He did not release details about how the payments would be subsidized or carried out.
Still, Santorum, who is currently a senior adviser to the Convention of States, denied allegations that the Trump proposition was a bribe to voters. Instead, he said, Trump is instilling the fact that it is essential that he have a Republican majority to go ahead and fulfill his plan.
“I don’t believe it’s a bribe,” Santorum said. “What the president says, if you give me a House, you give me a Senate, I can pass a tax bill. And that’s just common sense.”
“It’s not a bribe,” Santorum said. “It’s just saying, we need the House and the Senate if we’re going to get economic policy through the Congress.”
Santorum spoke about the national debt, which has exceeded $40 trillion. He added that one more big federal spending would move the government further in the wrong direction.
“People are more and more concerned about the fact that we have a $40 trillion debt,” Santorum said. “That’s not sound.”
