They’re at it again.
After a month of relative peace and distant negotiations, Iran and the U.S. traded blows, risking renewed military conflict.
According to a story by CNN, Iran said it launched missiles toward US military targets in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates as a reprisal for a US attack on Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island. But the US countered by saying Tehran was trying to send sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz –– the shipping route that’s become the center of regional anxieties and diplomatic struggles.
The rekindled fracas sent worldwide oil prices almost 3% higher. The fighting comes days after President Donald Trump said the Strait of Hormuz was now in the U.S. hand and that the main goal now was to put economic strain on Tehran, instead of pummeling it with its military power.
In a Truth Social post on Monday that didn’t mention the strikes, Trump once again criticized Iran as a “failed nation.” Iran’s “leadership is in total disarray and incapable of properly representing the country,” he added.
“We’re going to hit them hard,” Trump also told Fox News on Monday. “There will be a response.”
During the American reprisal, the US aimed at two Iranian rocket launchers on Iran’s Larak Island, where it observed Iranian forces preparing to launch rockets with mines into the strait, said Capt. Tim Hawkins, a spokesperson for US Central Command (CENTCOM).
