In a new turn in the artificial intelligence industry, U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche said the Department of Justice will probe criminal actions involving the mismanagement of AI but will not try to control the technology, despite forewarnings from industry leaders about the technology’s latent harm.
Blanche, during a White House press conference on Tuesday, labeled AI as “extraordinarily beneficial” to society and noted that the technology has become a hot spot in recent days. He said his department has pursued cases involving AI but emphasized that it plays no role in regulating the technology.
“As far as AI is concerned, there’s a lot of criminal laws. And so if anybody associated with AI violates criminal law, we’ll investigate that. We already have,” Blanche told reporters. “I do not think it’s the job of the Department of Justice to regulate. We’re prosecutors, not regulators. So, we’re not going to try to regulate AI.”
Recently, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called on AI companies to ease the pace at which they increase the capabilities of their most advanced models, saying that safeguards need to be developed before AI systems become too powerful.

“Left unchecked, it could outrun our ability to understand and control these systems, and so must be pursued very carefully, if at all,” he wrote.
Amodei recommended a three-stage framework for monitoring frontier AI development, involving global coordination with totalitarian regimes such as China to restrain AI capabilities.
Some Industry leaders have supported Amodei’s call, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who vowed that his company would match Anthropic’s commitment to giving independent evaluators employee-like access to its systems.
SpaceXAI CEO Elon Musk also backed Amodei. “Dario is right,” he said in a Sept. 12 post on X.
But President Donald Trump countered against calls for AI guardrails, calling them “a sick conspiracy” surrounding the technology that, he said, would only benefit China in the AI development race.
