The Trump administration allegedly coerced the FBI to probe Los Angeles protesters in a transgression of their constitutional rights and the policies of the elite law enforcement organization, a former FBI supervisor contends in a new whistleblower complaint.
A prior supervisory intelligence analyst in the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office, Jill Fields presented a formal whistleblower complaint to Senate Judiciary Committee leaders over the federal reaction to anti-ICE protest bustle around federal buildings, as well as in a residential area, early last year, according to a story by Newsmax.
According to Fields’ complaint, Emil Bove, then acting deputy attorney general, commanded the head of the Los Angeles field office to initiate a probe into activity outside a federal building.
Fields contended, in a separate instance, that the White House directed FBI Director Kash Patel to investigate protesters who held megaphones during immigration enforcement operations after agents had already examined their behavior and refused to open a case.
Allegedly, President Donald Trump had seen video of protesters employing megaphones to warn residents about operations targeting illegal aliens, explain their legal rights, and urge them not to open their doors without a signed judicial warrant, according to the complaint.
But a Justice Department spokesperson denied the allegations as politically motivated and emphasized that violence and interference with federal officers are not constitutionally protected.
“Under President Trump, the Department of Justice will continue to vigorously uphold the First Amendment rights of all Americans and restore the rule of law,” the spokesperson said.
“The DOJ and FBI have a responsibility to investigate any potential violations of federal law, and conspiracies to impede federal law enforcement and assaults on federal officers are against the law,” added the spokesperson.
