Exasperated by Supreme Court rulings against President Donald Trump, Republicans are pushing for future appointees who will persist as consistently aligned with the conservative movement, putting ideological loyalty at the center of the debate over the next vacancy.
The initiative reflects disappointment with a court conservatives control 6-3, including three justices Trump appointed during his first term. Their nominations have not assured victories for the president’s agenda, according to a story by Newsmax.
Showing his vexation with the Supreme Court, Trump has described his first-term nominees as “fools,” “lap dogs,” and “not the people I interviewed” after detrimental rulings, emphasizing his frustration with justices whose appointments helped cement the conservative majority.
So far, Trump has appointed Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett, who joined the court in 2017, 2018 and 2020, respectively, according to the court’s official biographies.
Judge James C. Ho, a Trump appointee to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, gave an example of the demand for greater ideological consistency, which he articulated during an October gathering of Christian activists at Washington’s Museum of the Bible, according to The New York Times.
Ho delineated what he called “biblically based principles of judicial selection” in a speech posted online last week. He said humility, honesty, and consistency were essential qualities for prospective justices.
The ideal nominee, Ho said, would be “one of the men who have been with us the whole time.”
Presidents should select judges “whose goal isn’t to get onto a bench, but to get into heaven,” he added.
