During a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv the co-pilot allegedly tried to crash the plane after knifing the pilot, but some passengers were able to restrain him while other pilots landed the plane without harm in Saudi Arabia, Israeli officials said on Wednesday.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu termed the event as “a highly severe security incident”, adding that Saudi authorities would interview the co-pilot of flydubai flight FZ1073 from the United Arab Emirates to Israel, which had more than 170 Israelis on board, according to a story by Newsmax.
The Times of Israel also reported that passengers in a video from the plane are heard saying, “You saved the plane. It’s good for you.” One passenger tells the person recording, “We were attacked and were guarding the pilot.”
“They tried to murder the pilot. We subdued [the attacker],” another passenger says. Someone points to a bound man and says, “This is the man who… stabbed him.” In a separate video to his family, another passenger describes a “terrorist” who tried to take over the plane and says he helped subdue the attacker, who was tied up.
The events led an Israeli official to say that a “major disaster was narrowly avoided” after a flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv diverted to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday amid what Israeli officials depicted as a hijacking attempt by one of the pilots.
Still, aircraft flight FZ1073, landed safely at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Airport in Tabuk, reports The Jerusalem Post.
According to the Newsmax story, the unnamed Israeli official said that investigators think one pilot tried to capture the plane, though they don’t know if he planned to crash it, fly it to Israel, or carry out an attack akin to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the United States.
