An off-duty New York Police officer was stabbed seven times, allegedly by an illegal immigrant from the Dominican Republic, before the suspect escaped the scene.
According to a story by the New York Post, D’Angelo Caraballo, 25, and Sneider Mejia, 24, arrived on an e-bike as Jose Mercedes, a 33-year-old Police Detective was extracting items out of the trunk of his car in the Bronx around 1:45 p.m. on Friday. The immigrants are accused of trying to snatch Mercedes’ gold chain, but the off-duty officer defended himself and was allegedly stabbed seven times by Caraballo.
The suspects fled, leaving the bloodied police investigator on the sidewalk, the outlet reported. Both suspects remain at large, according to a story by the Daily Wire.
Rapidly, Mercedes was taken to the hospital.
On Tuesday, police identified the suspects while an ongoing manhunt ensued. Reportedly, both suspects crossed the border illegally in 2023 before the Biden administration released them into the country, Fox News reported.
🚨 ANOTHER BIDEN-RELEASED ILLEGAL STRIKES AGAIN! 🚨 Two Dominican illegal aliens — caught and released into the US through Arizona under the Biden administration — are on the run after rolling up on an e-bike in broad daylight in the Bronx and stabbing an off-duty NYPD detective SEVEN TIMES while trying to rip the gold chain off his neck. DHS sources say one already has an active deportation order. Fox News reports Mejia racked up three NYC arrests and an ICE detainer that local authorities DENIED, while Caraballo was arrested five times and released so fast no detainers could even be filed. The detective fought back, chased them two blocks, then collapsed. Outrageous. How many more times?

“We want the justice system to ensure the police do their job effectively, but the courts go too easy on them, sending criminals right back out on the street,” Ricardo Mercedes, the officer’s uncle, told the Post. “We want a tough stance from the justice system.”
“The police catch them, but then they’re let go — right back out on the street. That is what we want to change,” his uncle added.
Zohran Mamdani, the mayor of New York City, and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch visited Mercedes at the hospital, according to the New York Post.
Mercedes was released from the hospital on Monday and was seen being rolled out in a wheelchair before he stood up and walked out on his own before a cheering crowd of hundreds of NYPD officers.
