In a new twist in the scandal regarding Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn, her staff members allegedly tried to change her birthdate in public records after she was elected to Congress, prompting new questions about her immigration history during an ongoing federal probe into a potential citizenship fraud.
On Tuesday, the New York Post reported that Omar’s congressional staff requested in May 2019 that the Minnesota Legislative Reference Library change her birth year from 1981 to 1982.
According to a story by Newsmax, the library also told The Washington Post that Omar’s staff had sought that change.
“On May 17, 2019, Library staff were informed by Rep. Omar’s congressional staff that her birth year was incorrect and requested that we change it to 1982,” the library’s director wrote in an email obtained by the New York Post.
Repeatedly, Omar has denied any misconduct and accused President Donald Trump’s administration of orchestrating a politically motivated persecution.
“For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns,” Omar said Monday. “This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation.”
But President Donald Trump demanded answers Tuesday, writing on Truth Social, “America wants answers, and we want them, NOW!”
The request came after a political opponent disseminated a video questioning Omar’s age and whether she qualified for U.S. citizenship through her father’s naturalization in 2000.
The director said Omar’s staff also was trying to correct her birth year on Wikipedia and in the Biographical Directory of the United States Congress.
Nevertheless, the library admitted that its original 1981 listing had been copied from publicly available sources without supporting documentation.
The new information came after Homeland Security Investigations agents searched Omar’s Washington, D.C., residence Monday as part of a federal probe into whether she or her late father made false statements on immigration paperwork, The Washington Post reported.
Investigators are probing whether Omar’s birthdate was altered to establish her eligibility for derivative citizenship through her father, Nur Omar Mohamed, who reportedly became a naturalized American citizen in 2000.
