While the U.S. is preparing its military basis to be able to work independently, Britain is asking citizens to stockpile food and water.

As the specter of a modern cold war seems to be resuscitating, the United States and Britain are preparing for the likelihood of a conflict with its current superpower adversaries: Russia and China.
The United States and Britain are independently preparing for troubles that could leave military installations and households without indispensable services, as Western governments respond to potential wartime threats and risks to key infrastructure, according to a story by Newsmax.
On the U.S. side, the Pentagon is forming plans to prepare major U.S. military bases to operate independently for at least 90 days in case that a war or cyberattacks interrupt electricity, water, communications, and supply chains, Fortune reported.
In Britain, the government is pressing households to stockpile enough food, drinking water, and other emergency supplies to manage at least three days without essential services.
British Defense Secretary Wes Streeting cautioned in an article published by The Telegraph that Russia and other enemies could have the military resources needed to attack NATO countries by 2030.
“To prevent the worst, we have to prepare for it,” Streeting wrote.
“By 2030 their force strength and war economy could put them in a position to attack,” he wrote, warning that Britain and its allies have little more than 1,000 days to strengthen their defenses.
Still, the initiatives of both nations are not known to be coordinated, and neither government has indicated that war is imminent.
“Power is combat now,” Pentagon chief spokesperson Sean Parnell told Fox News Digital. “Without electricity, you lose communications, water, logistics, assembly lines and just basic military command structures.”
The plan also calls for stockpiling ammunition, fuel, medical supplies, and critical minerals while forming alternative manufacturing and supply networks to keep U.S. forces operational during enduring conflicts.
On Sept. 30, Pete Hegseth, the War, divulged the Pentagon’s FORTRESS initiative — Federal Operations for Resilience, Troop Resources, Energy, Supply, and Survivability.
The FORTRESS program aims to lower the dependence of military installations on civilian infrastructure through portable nuclear reactors, battery storage systems, and independent electrical grids.
