The Trump administration has banned Microsoft, Adobe and six IT firms from sponsoring H-1B employees for green cards, Vice President JD Vance announced Thursday.
During a press conference, the Vice President made the comments on alleged visa fraud, during which he contended Microsoft is victimizing Americans by giving precedence to foreign workers. Later at the event, Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling announced that his department is also suspending Adobe from the program.
In addition, Vance called for the probe of nine universities over the use of foreign researchers, according to a story by Newsmax.
The Vice President accused Microsoft of using foreign employees to supersede American workers, saying the company fired 6,000 U.S. workers last year while benefiting from 6,300 H-1B visas and almost 3,000 green cards.
“In other words, if you do the math for every worker that Microsoft laid off, they replaced that worker with one and a half foreign indentured servants,” Vance said.
BREAKING: The Trump administration is suspending Microsoft, Adobe, and several major IT outsourcing firms from a key employment-based green card program, accusing them of abusing the visa system at the expense of American workers. Vice President JD Vance singled out Microsoft, saying the tech giant laid off 6,000 American workers while benefiting from 6,300 H-1B visas and nearly 3,000 green cards. "You cannot lay off American workers and then replace them with foreign indentured servants." The Labor Department says it will stop accepting new applications and processing pending applications from the targeted companies as federal investigations continue. In addition, the administration would cancel Microsoft’s participation in the permanent labor certification program, known as PERM, an employer-sponsored process used for many employment-based green cards, Vance said.
“They’ll no longer be able to take those H-1Bs and apply for permanent resident status within the United States of America,” he said.
Still, Vance did not indicate how the suspension would affect pending applications or how long it would remain in place.
“And so our message to Microsoft is, you’re a great American company, but you’ve got to hire great American workers,” he said. “You cannot lay off American workers and then replace them with foreign indentured servants.”
