Bishop Michael Burbidge Issues Statement on Virginia Constitutional Referendums Concerning Abortion and Marriage

Articles | November 4, 2026 | by Catholics for Catholics

Following the Midterm Elections in Virginia, Bishop Michael F. Burbidge of the Diocese of Arlington issued a statement expressing profound disappointment over voters’ approval of two constitutional amendments concerning abortion and marriage.

In the weeks leading up to the election, Bishop Burbidge had boldly encouraged Catholics throughout his diocese to pray, fast, and vote NO on both measures, warning that they threatened the sanctity of human life and the traditional definition of marriage. Despite his efforts and those of countless faithful Catholics, both amendments passed.

In his statement, Bishop Burbidge reaffirmed the Church’s unwavering teachings on life and marriage, reminding the faithful that these fundamental truths cannot be changed by the outcome of an election.
