Marco Rubio, the current Secretary of State and a key ally of Donald Trump, could resign, with the intent of going after the 2028 Republican Presidential nomination, according to a newspaper report.
The Independent reported that Republican insiders in Washington and senior British government officials told them that Rubio is pondering on departing his administration roles after Tuesday’s catastrophic midterm elections, in which Democrats conquered both the House and Senate.
Rubio, who has had a successful run as Secretary of State, also is the White House national security adviser. He is seen as a possible nemesis to Vice President JD Vance for the Republican nomination to be the successor or President Donald Trump, according to a story by Newsmax.
The Independent story is this: by leaving the Trump administration, Rubio could advance his presidential chances, especially as Republicans face voter backlash over the Iran war and rising energy costs.
“It makes complete sense for him to step down and leave the administration,” the ally said.
“Rubio is the leading candidate at the moment to be the [Republican] nominee. He’s definitely ahead of Vance.”
On Wednesday, a Newsweek story reported that the election results could muddle Vance’s presidential aspirations while possibly consolidating Rubio’s standing.
In addition, a New York Times/Siena poll performed during Oct. 12-19 demonstrated that Vance led Rubio by 33% to 23%, among Republican primary voters, with 26% undecided.
Recently, Vance has attributed the Iran war for Republicans’ election defeats, while Rubio has kept a low profile about the conflict.
A prior Florida senator who went for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016 and failed, has created a close working relationship with Trump despite their bitter opposition during that campaign.
Previously, Rubio denied any speculation about his political future in September, telling reporters he had “no plans at this time” to seek the presidency and remained focused on his administration duties.
