Supreme Court Refuses Trump Admin’s Request to Set Aside Thousands of California Ballots

On Monday evening, the Supreme Court promptly snubbed a request by the Trump administration to call for California to set aside 20,000 mail-in ballots that the administration claims have been given to noncitizens.

The Supreme Court’s order, which was unsigned and gave no explanation, came the same day that the administration lawyers had requested the court to take matters after a divided federal appeals court had rejected the administration’s reasons that California officials should impound the ballots for further examination. No public dissents were noted.

According to a story by Newsmax, the justices refused to intrude in a case involving approximately 20,000 registered voters whom the Justice Department categorized as potentially ineligible because of enquiries about their citizenship status, The Associated Press reported.

The decision by the Supreme Court leaves the lower court’s order in place as California gets ready to complete voting Tuesday in elections that will decide the fate of Congress for the remaining two years of Trump’s second term.

The Trump administration had worked to have California election officials divide the ballots under scrutiny from others until the voters’ eligibility could be proved.

Federal law bans noncitizens from voting in federal elections, and the administration has stressed the magnitude of proving citizenship to protect the integrity of election results.

Attorneys from the Justice Department contended that the temporary measure would ensure conformity with federal election laws while permitting ballots cast by eligible voters to be counted once their status was confirmed.

By contrast, California officials rejected the request, saying that the administration’s list had errors and that dividing ballots so close to Election Day would form logistical difficulties.
