Relationship between Catholicism and Politics

Articles | September 19, 2023 | by Catholics for Catholics

What is the relationship between Politics and the Catholic religion? Politics is just the caboose. The engine is Objective Truth, which is based on the Catholic Religion. They cannot be separated. The Church is a supernatural institution. Government is a natural institution. The supernatural must influence the natural with the eternal laws of God and promote a culture of life & virtue amongst its citizens.

To imagine that religion should, or even possibly can, be removed from politics is utterly laughable. It’s a position derived directly from the notion that “the State must be separated from the Church,” a thesis that Pope St. Pius X called “absolutely false, a most pernicious error” (Vehementer Nos 3).

What happens when Government rejects the supernatural authority of the Catholic Church? It starts becoming DISORDERED. Edward R. Murrow (American broadcast journalist & war correspondent): “A nation of sheep will beget a government of wolves.”

George Orwell: “All tyrannies rule through fraud and force, but once the fraud is exposed, they must rely exclusively on force..”

As Ronald Reagan said, the nine most terrifying words ever spoken are “I’m from the government, and I’m here to help.” Today, BigTech would silence Reagan, no doubt.

So, what is the function of Government according to Divine Revelation? God has ordained a structure; we are called to submit to Government and honor our leaders (Romans 13:1-4; Titus 3:1; 1 Peter 2:13-17; John 19:7-11). It doesn’t mean that every person is God-ordained, we vote for the individuals or sometimes rogue governments selected our leaders for us.We are mandated to pray for those governmental leaders who are over us (1 Timothy 2:1-2). The Government is meant to punish evil-doers and reward those who do right (1 Peter 2:14; Romans 13:2-3). Government is meant to bring stability to the land by adhering to justice (Proverbs 29:4). especially through the court system (Acts 25:11). Government has the ability to impose taxes for the common good (Matt 22:17-21). Government has the right to appoint its boundaries and borders (Acts 17:26). Sometimes, it is necessary to disobey Government, namely, when it compels us to sin. For example, if the Government says we cannot pray to God (Daniel 6), or we must worship idols (Daniel 3), or we must kill innocent babies (Exodus 1:15-21), then we must disobey (Acts 5:29). The goal of Catholicism is to establish the social reign of Christ the King so that men may govern the world in holiness, justice and integrity (cf. Wisdom 9:3) under the Kingship of Christ. Why? So that Jesus Christ may be Lord and King of every individual human heart and every nation.

Right now, under the fake Catholic Joe Biden’s administration, we have entered a period where the Democrat Party’s legislation is America’s religion. Venerable Fulton Sheen warned us about our present crisis: “Politics – the conflict of the future will be between a God religion and a state religion, between Christ and antichrist, but in political disguise” [Book] Quotable Sheen (p.186; 1967). This is where we’re at right now.

Don’t get me wrong, serving in Politics is a noble endeavor. Fr Pierre Amar (diocese of Versailles, France): “Politics, in the first sense, is the management of the life of the city. And God, who wants the good of men, is interested in this work. In his name, the Church never tires of asking for a generation of men and women who understand that politics is a demanding path of charity in action – a charity based on an essential conviction that all power is called to service. To enter politics, to serve one’s brothers means to forget oneself and to take on the mantle of the servant – like Christ on the evening of Holy Thursday” (Columbia Magazine, May 2020; p.10).

CCC 2246 It is a part of the Church’s mission “to pass moral judgments even in matters related to politics, whenever the fundamental rights of man or the salvation of souls requires it. the means, the only means, she may use are those which are in accord with the Gospel and the welfare of all men according to the diversity of times and circumstances.”

CCC 2244 Every institution is inspired, at least implicitly, by a vision of man and his destiny, from which it derives the point of reference for its judgment, its hierarchy of values, and its line of conduct. Most societies have formed their institutions in the recognition of a certain preeminence of man over things. Only the divinely revealed religion has clearly recognized man’s origin and destiny in God, the Creator and Redeemer. the Church invites political authorities to measure their judgments and decisions against this inspired truth about God and man: Societies not recognizing this vision or rejecting it in the name of their independence from God are brought to seek their criteria and goal in themselves or to borrow them from some ideology. Since they do not admit that one can defend an objective criterion of good and evil, they arrogate to themselves an explicit or implicit totalitarian power over man and his destiny, as history shows.

Who would deny that the great check on state power throughout the entirety of European history, from the conversion of Constantine until the 20th century, was the Catholic Church? Think of the Roman Emperor Theodosius, commander of all Rome’s legions, stripping himself of all imperial insignia to do penance before an unarmed cleric, St. Ambrose, bishop of Milan. It was the Catholic Church that brought a moral check to bear on the exercise and prerequisites of power – (H.W. Crocker III is the author most recently of ‘Triumph: The Power and the Glory of the Catholic Church, A 2,000-Year History’. Copyright Crisis Magazine © 2001 Washington DC, USA).

Proverbs 29:2 describes being governed by President Trump and now being governed by President Biden. “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when a wicked man rules, the people groan.”
