Contemplations on the Prayer of the Exiled People and Acknowledging One’s Misdeeds
In the first reading of today, we come across a remarkable prayer of the exiled people in Babylon. They openly admit their sins and guilt, acknowledging that they are exiled from their land as a result of their wrongdoing.
What is most impressive about this confession is the collective nature of it. These people had committed sins of various degrees, but they all stood together and admitted their guilt. The nobles, kings’ sons, elders, and commoners all came together in their confession and penance.
It’s easy to shift blame on others and compare our sins to those we believe are worse. However, these people confessed in unison, understanding that they all fell short of God’s commandments and ignored His voice.
When we consider the sins of our society, country, or Church, it can be disheartening. But pointing fingers and placing blame is not the solution. Instead, we must repent for our own sins and perform penance for ourselves and others. Our Lady of Fatima exhorted us to make sacrifices for sinners, as numerous souls go to hell because no one prays or makes sacrifices for them.
It’s time to take responsibility for our actions and our part in the world’s problems. Rather than spending hours consuming negative news and complaining about what’s wrong, let’s devote more time to prayer and making sacrifices. Not only will our hearts be more at peace, but we will also be doing our part to change the world.
