Gregory, a celebrated Doctor of the Church, was born in Arianzus, Asia Minor, in 325 AD, and passed away in 389. His father, Gregory, was the Bishop of Nazianzus from 329 to 374.

At age 30, Gregory was baptized and soon joined his friend Basil in a newly established monastery. Later, at age 41, he was selected as suffragan bishop of Caesarea. Like his close friend St. Basil, he faced difficulties combating Aryanism and opposing the then-Arian emperor, Valens.

It was during his time in Constantinople that he began giving the great sermons on the Trinity, for which he is renowned, as he tried to bring Christians back from Aryanism. He was highly esteemed and referred to simply as “the Theologian.”
