Fox News reports that former President Trump has chosen Senator JD Vance of Ohio as his running mate for the 2024 Republican presidential ticket.
Vance, a 39-year-old former venture capitalist and author, was a one-time critic of Trump but has since become a strong supporter of the former president’s America First agenda.
The selection is seen as a move to appeal to working-class voters in the Rust Belt, particularly in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin. Vance’s background as a working-class kid from Ohio and his military service in the Iraq War are seen as assets in this effort.
Fox News also notes that Trump’s selection of Vance is expected to boost his appeal among working-class Democrats who might otherwise support President Biden.
The Biden campaign, however, is framing Vance as a champion of Trump’s MAGA movement and a potential enabler of Trump’s extreme policies.
