The Minnesota Republican Party and the Republican National Committee are calling for an investigation after a noncitizen claimed to have received a primary ballot without registering to vote in Minnesota. This individual, who is lawfully present in the state, reported to GOP representatives that he was surprised to find himself on the voter roll and receiving a ballot, as he had not registered or requested it. His concern stems from how this may impact his residency status or future citizenship eligibility.

Kevin Cline, an election integrity counsel for the RNC, and David Hann, chair of the Minnesota GOP, have formally reached out to Minnesota Secretary of State Steven Simon. They are demanding a thorough review of the state’s voter rolls to ensure that only eligible citizens are registered, along with a comprehensive investigation of the potential issues raised by this incident.

The situation is being framed against the backdrop of a law passed in March 2023, known as “Drivers Licenses For All,” which permits residents, regardless of immigration status, to obtain a driver’s license. Supporters of the bill, including Democratic Governor Tim Walz, argued that it would enhance safety in the state. However, Cline and Hann have raised concerns about the implications of this law on voter registration and the potential for noncitizen involvement in elections, particularly given that the eligibility checks conducted by county officials may not be equipped to handle the recent changes.

In their letter to Secretary Simon, the Republicans questioned whether the State Voter Registration System (SVRS) can effectively verify the citizenship and eligibility of individuals automatically registered through state agencies. They argue that this incident might indicate significant flaws in the voter registration process or negligence on the part of election staff.

The letter emphasized the urgency of addressing this issue, with a deadline set for August 12 for Simon’s office to respond with details on the protocols in place to prevent noncitizens from being registered and receiving ballots. The GOP leaders described the situation as a potential breakdown in voter registration integrity, urging immediate corrective action and transparency to restore public trust in the electoral process.

Fox News Digital has sought comments from Simon’s and Walz’s offices but has not received a response as of this report.
