CONCLAVE RECAP : DAY 1

“Missa pro eligendo Romano Pontifice”, began at 10:00 AM on May 7, in St. Peter’s Basilica.

The Mass was concelebrated by the Cardinal Electors and presided over by the Dean of the College of Cardinals, His Eminence Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re. Read the homily delivered by His Eminence Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re.

At 4:30 PM, the entry of the cardinal electors into the Conclave took place, along with their oath-taking ceremony before the “Extra omnes” – the moment when the doors of the Sistine Chapel were closed to begin the voting.

Black smoke emerged at approximately 9 p.m. Rome time, confirming the 133 cardinal electors sequestered inside had not reached the required two-thirds majority — at least 89 votes — needed to elect Pope Francis’ successor.

Starting Thursday, the cardinals will conduct four voting sessions daily—two in the morning and two in the afternoon. After each session, smoke will rise from the chimney: black if no consensus is reached, or white if a new pope has been chosen.
