A group of conservative House Republicans joined Democrats in blocking a package of tax breaks and spending cuts through the Budget Committee on Friday.
The conservative lawmakers want steeper spending cuts to Medicaid and energy tax breaks from the Biden Era, before they can support President Donald Trump’s “beautiful” bill, according to Newsmax. The group warned that the tax cuts would put an additional $36 trillion debt to the country.
According to the Newsmax story, the 16-21 failed vote delays, for now, House Speaker Mike Johnson’s push to have the package approved next week. But the holdout lawmakers vowed to stay all weekend to negotiate changes as the president is returning to Washington. “Something needs to change or you’re not going to get my support,” said Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas.
Named the One Big Beautiful Act after a phrase by President Donald Trump, the bill is 1,116 pages long and is teetering at a crucial moment, according to Newsmax. The conservative group is waiting for more profound cuts to Medicaid and other programs to help offset the costs of the tax breaks. But at the same time, lawmakers from high-tax states including New York are demanding a deeper tax deduction, known as SALT, for their constituents.
Nevertheless, Johnson insisted that Republicans are on their way to pass the bill, which he believes will infuse a dose of stability into a wavering economy.
Though they criticized the package, Democrats will be powerless to stop it if Republicans are united. They stressed that millions of people would lose their health coverage if the bill passes while the richest people would reap tax cuts. They also said it would increase future deficits.
“That is bad economics. It is unconscionable,” said Rep. Brendan Boyle, the top Democrat lawmaker on the panel.
