Law enforcement arrested a U.S. citizen who also has German citizenry on charges that he traveled to Israel attempting to attack the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv, according to Newsmax
Joseph Neumeyer approached the embassy building on May 19 with a backpack that had Molotov cocktails, but got into a conflict with a guard and ultimately ran away, dropping his backpack as the guard tried to grab him, according to federal officials.
Police then traced Neumeyer back to his hotel, which was located a few blocks from the Embassy. They arrested him there, according to a complaint filed in the Eastern District of New York, according to Newsmax.
The attack happened during Israel’s war on Gaza, which is now in its 19th month of hostilities, according to Newsmax.
From Colorado, Neumeyer has dual U.S. and German citizenship, according to court records. He had traveled from the U.S. to Canada and then arrived to Israel in April.
Neumeyer, 28, had made a series of menacing social media posts before having a go at the attack, prosecutors said.
According to Newsmax, Israeli authorities deported Neumeyer to New York on Saturday. He had an initial court appearance before a federal judge in Brooklyn on Sunday, the same day his criminal complaint was unsealed.
Neumeyer’s court-appointed attorney Jeff Dahlberg declined to comment.
