Parents Block Part of a Radical Child Custody Transgender Law of Colorado

The bill originally was called misgendering a child ‘coercive control.’

The Democratic governor of Colorado quietly signed a law that will make misgendering an illegal, discriminatory act, according to the Daily Wire.

On Friday, Jared Polis signed the “Concerning Legal Protections for Transgender Individuals” without issuing a statement or having a ceremony, according to the Daily Wire.

The law at first called for that parents in custody battle who allegedly misgender their child would be guilty of “coercive control”, thus possibly losing their child, the Daily Wire reported.

But when a group of parents formed by more than 700 Coloradans signed up to testify against the bill and tens of thousands more signed the petition against it, the bill was modified. The provision against parents is not in the new bill, according to the Daily Wire.

“Ultimately, Democrats were forced to strike the radical custody battle language before the bill became law,” wrote the Daily Wire. “Some Democrat lawmakers even backed down and refused to vote for the measure unless the child custody clause was removed.”

Nevertheless. The new law still bars the courts of Colorado from working together with other states that protect children from parents who want to give them transgender surgeries or hormones. It also compels schools to implement dress codes to permit students who identify as transgender to wear school uniforms of the opposite sex.

In addition, the new bill will also permit people to change the gender marker on their driver’s license three times, up from just once.

“This bill was an attack on parental rights,” Colorado House Minority Leader Rose Pugliese told The Daily Wire. “And what we saw were people rising up, which I think is great. Our grassroots movement was really strong, and parents came out,” she said. “This is an issue that transcends party lines. It doesn’t matter if you’re a Republican, a Democrat, or unaffiliated. Nobody wants the government to be raising our children or telling us how to raise our children.”
