In a strong telling of his new pontificate, Pope Leo XIV reaffirmed the supremacy of the nuclear family, saying that it was founded on the “stable union between a man and a woman,” according to Newsmax.
In addition, the Supreme Pontiff defended the unborn and the elderly, saying on Friday that they enjoy dignity as God’s creatures, saying in clear language the Catholic teaching on marriage and abortion at the beginning of his papacy.
During his first meeting with the Vatican diplomatic corp, Leo, the first American Pope, made a call to recuperating multilateral diplomacy and stimulating dialogue between religions in the search for peace. The Vatican released Leo’s prepared text and that of the dean of the diplomatic corps—the audience was private.
The meeting with the diplomatic corps is one of the traditions for a new Pope right after a conclave, which permits the Pontiff to receive the leaders of the governments of the world before his inaugural Holy Mass which is scheduled to take place this Sunday at St. Peter’s Square. With diplomatic relations with over 180 nations, the Holy See is a sovereign state and has an observer status with the United Nations.
