A second priest has been slain in a matter of a week in Kenya, according to news agency Agenzia Fides.

Father Alloyce Cheruiyot Bett was shot to death in the Tot area of Kerio Valley, located in the Western Highlands of the country, in Elgeyo Marakwetm County, according to Agenzia Fides. The homicide happened on May 22, after Father Bett said Holy Mass in the village of Kakbiken.

Authorities said that several gunmen fired rounds. One of the bullets hit Father Bett in the neck, killing him instantly, according to Agenzia Fides.

Police arrested six people in connection with the murder of Father Bett, Kenyan police said. A police spokesperson said that the homicide of the priest was not connected to cattle thefts or other forms of thievery.

Still local sources told Agenzia Fides that the gunmen could have confused Father Bett with a police informant who was helping law enforcement in a security operation. Tott is the second priest killed in the country in the scope of a week.

Father John Ndegwa Maina, parish priest of St. Louis Parish in Igwamiti, died in a hospital on May 15 after being found injured on the side of the Nakuru-Nairobi highway, several kilometers from his parish.
