The FBI is investigating the killing of two Israeli Embassy employees near the Jewish Museum in Washington D.C. as a possible hate crime, according to Fox News.
The FBI identified the victims as Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim, a couple who worked at the embassy. Lischinsky was born in Israel and grew up in Germany, his mother is Christian and father is Jewish.
They were shot around 9:08 p.m. Wednesday. Milgrim was an American employee of the embassy, Fox News reported.
Yechiel Leiter, Israel’s Ambassador to the U.S. said the two victims were dating and about to be engaged. He added that Lischinsky had “purchased a ring this week with the intention of proposing to his girlfriend next week in Jerusalem.”
Steven Jensen, the assistant director in charge of the FBI Washington field office, said during a press conference that the Bureau is working with the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) to “look into ties to potential terrorism or motivation based on a bias-based crime or a hate crime.”
The news conference was hosted by D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, with Attorney General Pam Bondi and Israel’s ambassador to the U.S., Yechiel Leiter.
Mayor Bowser followed Jensen’s words, stating that it was the FBI the entity that will be conducting the investigation.
“We will not tolerate any acts of terrorism,” Bowser said. “We will not tolerate antisemitism.”
The event at the museum was for young Jewish professionals who work in foreign policy.
Fox News reported that according to MPD Chief Pamela Smith, the suspect is 30-year-old Elias Rodriguez of Chicago, who was pacing outside the museum during the event, and yelled “Free, free Palestine” while he was in police custody. The suspect’s weapon has been recovered.
