Vaunted as the largest defense sales deal in history, the United States and Saudin Arabia announced the happening just hours after President Donald Trump started his four-day Middle East tour Tuesday.
Almost $142 Billion, the deal will provide Saudi Arabia with the latest technological war equipment and services from over a dozen American defense companies, according to the Dailywire.
The White House said the defense sales deal will be comprised of five categories— air and missile defense, border security and land forces modernization, air force advancement and space capabilities, maritime and coastal security and information and communication systems upgrades.
“Underscoring our commitment to strengthening our defense and security partnership, the United States and Saudi Arabia signed the largest defense sales agreement in history—nearly $142 billion,” the White House said.
In addition, the defense deal is part of Saudi Arabia’s larger investment commitment of $600 billion to the United States. The program also will include “extensive training and support to build the capacity of the Saudi armed forces, including enhancement of Saudi service academies and military medical services.”
According to the Dailywire’s story, the agreement cements the support of the United States for Saudi Arabia as it tries to prevent Iran, the country’s regional nemesis, from getting nuclear weapons. Trump is scheduled to also visit Quatar and the United Arab Emirates during his trip.
Trump made strong ties with various Gulf countries during his first term, leading to the Abraham Accords between the UAE, Israel and Bahrain. Trump has said he wants to include Saudi Arabia in the agreements, but the current war in Israel has thwarted those efforts.
