Syrian authorities arrested a number of perpetrators linked to a horrific, deadly bombing and gunfire attack that killed at least 25 church-goers at a Greek Orthodox temple on Sunday.
The Syrian Interior Ministry said it arrested “a number of criminals involved in the attack,” the Orthodox Times reported.
Anas Khattab, Interior Minister, said the police operation was conducted in “locations linked to cells of the terrorist organization Islamic State,” according to Fox News.
Government officers found a booby-trapped motorcycle and other explosive devices during a raid close to Damascus “against cells affiliated with the Daesh (IS) terrorist group,” according to France24.
As people began praying at Mar Elias Church in Dweil’a, situated on the peripheries of Damascus, the perpetrator walked into the temple and opened fire on the parishioners. He later blew himself up.
After the attack, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa promised that authorities would work nonstop until those who took part in planning the heinous crime would be brought to justice.

No one claimed responsibility for the attack, but Noreddine Al-Baba, the Syrian Interior Minister, said that after an initial investigation, ISIS was the likely perpetrator.
“The security of places of worship is a red line,” Al-Baba said further, castigating ISIS and what remains of the former government of Ba’athist dictator Bashar al-Assad as actors trying to destabilize Syria, according to Fox News.
The attack “reminds us of the importance of solidarity, and unity of the government and the people in facing all that threatens our nation’s security and stability”, Sharaa said of the church bombing.
