In a stunning confession, a Minnesota State Lawmaker revealed that she and her family have been living without legal authorization, igniting a debate over her fitness to hold office.
Rep. Kaohly Vang Her (DFL–St. Paul), who represents District 64A, told the circumstances of her status during a session, according to Resist the Mainstream. Her serves as Deputy Speaker Pro Tempore, in addition to being a co-chair of key committees including Commerce, Finance and Policy.
As Her explained: “Because his mother had died, my father, as the one processing the paperwork, put my grandmother down as his mother,” she said. “And so I am illegal in this country. My parents are illegal here in this country.”
Her was born in Laos and raised in Wisconsin. She arrived in the U.S. as a refugee at the age of four. According to Resist the Mainstream, Her’s campaign biography emphasizes her family’s hard work and pursuit of the American dream, noting her father’s employment at a paper factory and her mother’s role as a teacher’s aide.

Still, Minnesota law demands that all state legislators to be U.S. citizens, raising questions about whether Her’s current status bars her from holding elected office. Some legal experts have said that if Her is living in the country without lawful status, she could face deportation under federal immigration laws.
Moreover, if Her has declared citizenship on legal documents such as voter registration or campaign filings, more legal issues connected to misrepresentation may surface, according to Trending Politics.
