Andrew Cuomo, New York State’s former governor who comes from a political dynasty, was trounced by a radical socialist Muslim in New York City’s mayoral primary.
Zohran Mamdani, an Assemblyman from Queens garnered 44% of the votes in New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary, besting Cuomo who managed to get 36% of the vote. Cuomo conceded defeat and called his rival to congratulate him for the victory Tuesday night, according to The Daily Wire.
Cuomo comes from a well-known Catholic family; his father, Mario Cuomo was a politician who was the governor of New York during the early 1980s to mid-1990s.
Cuomo, 67 was a well-known national figure who was trying to make a return after having resigned from office in 2021 during the middle of the COVID pandemic. Despite having the support of famous politicians like Hillary Clinton, he was plagued by a sexual harassment scandal,
“Tonight was not our night,” Cuomo said. “Tonight was Assemblyman Mamdani’s night.”’

According to The Catholic Herald, a 2021 article in the National Catholic Register was headlined “Andrew Cuomo Sacrificed His Catholic Faith for Political Power.” It showed how the younger Cuomo “represented a new generation of the liberal Catholic politician”, while Mario Cuomo “practiced his faith and took the public consequences of that faith seriously.”
Mamdani, 33, surprised everyone when an early lead put him at an even pace with Cuomo in the days prior to the election. According to The Wire, “an Emerson College poll released Monday had Cuomo leading Mamdani by a slim 35% to 32% margin in first-choice votes, but found that Mamdani pulled ahead after several rounds. But a Marist University poll conducted a week prior showed Cuomo winning both in the first round and after several rounds of ranked choice.”
Mamdani showcased his socialist views during the campaign. He promised to freeze rent, start city-run grocery stores, and allocate $65 million to transgender procedures for both kids and adults.
In addition, Mamdani vowed to make school lunches, city buses, and childcare free, and to implement a “Department of Community Safety” to “prevent violence before it happens” — which critics say is simply an effort to defund the police, according to The Wire.
