A Nobel Peace Prize for President Donald Trump?
It seems unlikely. For now.
Oleksandr Merezhko, a Ukrainian lawmaker withdrew his Nobel Peace Prize nomination for Trump, saying that the president swung his emphasis from the war in Ukraine to the fracas between Israel and Iran. He believes Trump is appeasing Russia and not working to create true peace, reported Newsweek.
According to Newsmax, Merezhko, chair of Ukraine’s parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee, said that he had “lost any sort of faith and belief” in Trump’s capacity to negotiate peace between Ukraine and Russia.
Merezhko said he was frustrated over Moscow’s lack of engagement and Trump has appeared unwilling to put on some more pressure.
“Trump is evading — he is dodging — the need to impose sanctions on Russia,” Merezhko said.
At first, Merezhko nominated Trump in November 2024, enthused by the president’s campaign promise to bring an end to the war in Ukraine in the lapse of 24 hours after taking office. But his confidence has waned. Merezhko said he submitted the withdrawal of his nomination on Monday.
Trump said that the war between Ukraine and Russia was one of the biggest conflicts in Europe since World War II. Since he took office, he has tried to broker a peace deal between both countries, to no avail.
In May, Trump conceded that Russia could be delaying a peace accord, saying he was going to give President Vladimir Putin two weeks. “We’ll respond a little bit differently,” Trump said.
Two weeks have gone by. Nothing.
“I don’t think Putin took the two weeks seriously,” said John Foreman, a former British defense attaché to both Moscow and Kyiv, according to Newsmax.
