Border Patrol officers shot and killed an armed man who allegedly opened fire on them in McAllen, Texas, according to the Department of Homeland Security. Newsmax reported Monday that Ryan Louis Mosqueda, 27, attacked border patrol officers.
“This morning an individual opened fire at the entrance of the United States Border Patrol sector annex in McAllen, Texas,” a representative of the Department of Homeland Security, Tricia McLaughlin, wrote Monday in a statement to Newsmax, which was also posted to DHS’s X account. “Both Border Patrol agents and local police helped neutralize the shooter.”
Newsmax reported that federal officers returned fire at Mosqueda. The attacker had an assault rifle and was carrying a utility vest, McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez told reporters Monday morning.

“Two officers and a Border Patrol employee were injured, including one shot in the knee. All three have gone to the hospital. This is an ongoing investigation led by the @FBI,” Rodriguez said.
The gunfire exchange happened at a Border Patrol center across the street from McAllen International Airport. Mosqueda supposedly arrived at the center in a white two-door sedan. Something was written on the car, but “what it means, or whether or not it is an underlying reason for him being here, I do not know,” Rodriguez said.
Officers said they found another rifle and more ammunition. The attacker’s motives are not known, Rodriguez said. One officer was injured in the shooting, but Rodriguez said it was unclear if the injury was from shrapnel or a bullet.
Rodriguez said that Mosqueda was connected to an address in Michigan, but was reported missing from a Weslaco, Texas, address around 4 a.m. Monday. Weslaco is about 20 miles from the Border Patrol facility.
“An hour and a few minutes later, he was at this particular location opening fire on the federal building and our federal agents,” Rodriguez said. “From now on, the FBI will be handling the investigation.”
