India is the ensuing country in line to have tariffs enforced by President Donald Trump’s administration, according to a message he posted on Social X on Wednesday.
Trump said he will impose a 25 percent tariff on Indian goods starting Aug. 1, according to The Epoch Times. Mentioning that country’s high trade barriers and an ongoing dependency on Russian energy and weapons, the levies will include supplementary unstipulated penalties.
Rendered in Truth Social, the post depicts India’s tariffs as “among the highest in the world,” and Trump said the extra levies would address New Delhi’s military and energy links to Moscow amid the war in Ukraine.
“Remember, while India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their Tariffs are far too high … and they have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any Country,” he wrote.
Although Trump has constantly pressed India to allow more U.S. exports, talks were bogged down over agricultural and dairy products in particular, as India resisted any move to open those sectors.
Trump noted that India is among the biggest buyers of Russian energy, providing that country with resources to continue its aggression against Kyiv.
