Besides funding the gravy train for multinational NGOs, USAID showed little to broaden American interests abroad, said State Secretary Marco Rubio.

The free ride is over.
USAID, the biggest branch of the United States that distributes money to many countries across the world, will cease its programs. That job will fall to the U.S. State Department, according to President Donald Trump’s administration.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that USAID will no longer send assistance to foreign countries, saying that for decades that entity failed to make sure that it funded programs that supported American interests, according to Fox News. Starting July 1, the State Department will take over the foreign assistance programs, he said.
“Beyond creating a globe-spanning NGO industrial complex at taxpayer expense, USAID has little to show since the end of the Cold War. Development objectives have rarely been met, instability has often worsened, and anti-American sentiment has only grown,” Rubio wrote.
“This era of government-sanctioned inefficiency has officially come to an end. Under the Trump Administration, we will finally have a foreign funding mission in America that prioritizes our national interests. As of July 1st, USAID will officially cease to implement foreign assistance. Foreign assistance programs that align with administration policies—and which advance American interests—will be administered by the State Department, where they will be delivered with more accountability, strategy, and efficiency,” he continued.

According to the Daily Wire, for months Trump officials have been auditing USAID, reducing its operations and placing it under Rubio’s control. The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has been probing USAID funding, eliminating thousands of programs worth tens of billions of taxpayer dollars.
The Daily Wire reported that what spending is left will be transferred and closely scrutinized for quantifiable returns toward the United States’ national interest, according to Rubio. Of the regions and communities that have received funding from USAID in recent decades, American objectives have “rarely been met.” At the same time, “instability has often worsened, and anti-American sentiment has only grown,” Rubio said.
The move comes after the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) gutted USAID as part of Trump’s effort to remove waste, fraud and abuse from the federal government.
