A shooter opened fire on five U.S. Army soldiers at a military base in eastern Georgia before he was arrested by authorities. All five soldiers were treated at Fort Stewart base before they were taken to Winn Army Community Hospital, the Army base said in a post on social media.

The gunman is also a soldier, according to a U.S. official, Reuters reported. The armed aggressor’s identity has not been released. “Law enforcement was dispatched for a possible shooting in the 2nd ABCT complex at 10:56 a.m. The shooter was apprehended at 11:35 a.m.,” Fort Stewart said.

The magnitude of the victim’s injuries is unknown. The base said that the shooting remains under investigation and “no additional information will be released until the investigation is complete.”

Georgia Republican Gov. Brian Kemp posted on X, “As we remain in close contact with law enforcement on the ground, Marty, the girls, and I are saddened by today’s tragedy at Ft. Stewart. We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask that Georgians everywhere do the same.”

The base’s lockdown was lifted, said a social media post issued by the Fort Stewart Hunter Army Airfield at around 12:30 p.m. ET.  However, the base’s 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area was still on lockdown as of that time, it said.

“There is no active threat to the community,” the base said in its statement, adding that the shooting suspect was apprehended about 45 minutes after police were dispatched to the base.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that President Donald Trump was briefed on the shooting and is “monitoring the situation.”
