In a new turn in U.S.-Mexico relations, Mexican President Claudia Scheinbaum’s administration consented to send 26 top cartel leaders who are wanted in the United States, including one who allegedly killed a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy.
The move is part of a major agreement between Mexico and the U.S., which is leading a crackdown on drug smuggling. In addition, the Trump administration had declared a war on Latin American cartels, with President Donald Trump instructing the Pentagon to move against them.
According to Just the News, Trump officials agreed to not seek the death penalty for the cartel members. The death penalty is illegal in Mexico.
“Today is the latest example of the Trump administration’s historic efforts to dismantle cartels and foreign terrorist organizations,” said Attorney General Pamela Bondi. “These 26 men have all played a role in bringing violence and drugs to American shores — under this Department of Justice, they will face severe consequences for their crimes against this country. We are grateful to Mexico’s National Security team for their collaboration in this matter.”

Bondi thanked the efforts of the officers of the Drug Enforcement Administration, FBI, U.S. Marshal’s Service, and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations. In addition, she said she was grateful to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and the Los Angeles County Police Department “for their valuable contributions to these investigations.”
In February, Mexico transferred to U.S. authorities 30 other highly-sought cartel members. One of the cartel members who was sent in this latest group to the U.S. is Roberto Salazar, who is wanted for the murder of Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Juan Escalante, who was killed as he was leaving his home during the early morning hours in 2008, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
Other cartel members who were sent to the U.S. include Abigael González Valencia, a leader of the group “Los Cuinis,” which is closely tied with the infamous cartel, Jalisco New Generation.
