Just hours after Charlie Kirk was pronounced dead, hundreds of faithful went to his home in Scottsdale Arizona to pray the Rosary during a candlelight vigil.

Organized by Catholics for Catholics President John C. Yep and led by Father Daniel Cruz, the crowd prayed an emotive Rosary, including chants in Latin. The vigil was streamed live via Youtube.

Kirk, a popular conservative activist known for his work among youths, was shot and killed Wednesday at a Utah college where he was holding an outdoor speaking event.

President Donald Trump, a friend of Kirk, was the first to confirm the death of the activist. The speaker was also the CEO of Turning Point USA, a youth organization; Kirk was also known as a Trump sympathizer.

“No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie,” Trump posted on his Truth Social account. Trump added that Kirk, 31, was “great and even legendary.”

At press time, authorities were still looking for the shooter.

Yep, like Kirk, is originally from Chicago; both men formed a friendship and kept their bond as they relocated to Southern Arizona, Yep recalled. Though protestant, Kirk had a deep love and respect for the Blessed Virgin Mary, even defending her in his podcast, Yep said.

Yep recalled Kirk saying in his podcast: ‘“We have to give Mary a little more reverence. These Catholics got it right.”’

“That same Blessed Mother is in heaven right now and she is helping Charlie, hopefully making it to heaven,” Yep said. “And she is helping his kids, who lost their daddy today.”

What motivated Kirk was his love for Jesus Christ, Yep said.

“He felt a call deep within his heart. This was not about politics. It was about the love of Jesus,” Yep said.

Kirk was a brave man and those who attended the vigil are also brave, especially in these violent, unpredictable times, Yep added.

“What you’re doing right here is bravery. It’s courage,” Yep told the crowd. “You’re lowering the blood of that man who was shot point blank range. You are honoring it; his legacy by staying here in public. Because we will not fear, it will never stop us. As John Paul II, he would never back down.”

In a video message posted on Truth Social, Trump said he was “filled with grief and anger at the heinous assassination of Charlie Kirk”.

“Charlie inspired millions and tonight all who knew him and loved him are united in shock and horror. Charlie is a patriot who devoted his life to the cause of open debate and the country that he loves so much, the United States of America,” Trump said.

“He’s a model for truth and freedom, and there’s never been anyone who was so respected by youth.”

“Charlie was also a man of deep, deep faith. And we take comfort in the knowledge that he is now at peace with God in heaven,” Trump said, adding that he asked God to watch over Kirk’s wife and children “in this terrible hour of heartache and pain.”

Trump said, “This is a dark moment for America.”
