Air Force Two, the plane carrying the casket of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, landed successfully at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport around 4:45 p.m. on Thursday.
Also onboard was Vice President JD Vance, who was close with Kirk, and Second Lady Usha Vance, who flew to Salt Lake City to retrieve Kirk’s casket.
Kirk’s family and some of his friends were also on board the plane.
The casket was unloaded and placed in a hearse. The casket is expected to go to the Hansen Mortuary Chapel on Seventh Street, just north of Northern Avenue, in Phoenix.
Vance shuffled his schedule on Thursday, nixing plans to attend a Sept. 11 commemoration in New York City and heading instead to Utah, where Kirk was assassinated on Wednesday.
While in Utah, Vance and his wife were to meet with Kirk’s family and close friends, the person with knowledge told the AP. JD Vance talked about his relationship with Kirk in a roughly 1,000-word eulogy on X, formerly known as Twitter.
