Charlie Kirk, a popular conservative activist known for his work among youths, was shot and killed Wednesday at a Utah college where he was holding an outdoor speaking event.

President Donald Trump, a friend of Kirk, was the first to confirm the death of the activist. The speaker was also the CEO of Turning Point USA, a youth organization; Kirk was also known as a Trump sympathizer.

“No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie,” Trump posted on his Truth Social account.

Trump added that Kirk, 31, was “great and even legendary.”

“He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!” the president wrote, later ordering American flags nationwide to fly at half-staff until Sunday at 6 p.m., according to the New York Post.

Turning Point USA also confirmed Kirk’s death: “It is with a heavy heart that we confirm that Charles James Kirk has been murdered by a gunshot that took place during Turning Point USA’s “The American Comeback Tour” campus event at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025.”

After being on the loose for hours, the assassin was finally put in custody, said FBI Director Kash Patel. Initially, reports about an arrest were mixed, after a video showed officers arresting an older, gray-haired man— it turns out he was not the assailant.

John C. Yep, President of Catholics for Catholics, praised Kirk for his work with Catholics for Catholics and his labor with young people. He added that the killing of his friend showed the disturbing era the country is going through.

“We are heartbroken. Charlie was one of the greatest patriots. He was my dear friend who loved America and most importantly he loved Our Lord, Yep said. “We have reached a troubling new time in America. This country needs prayers more than ever. Pray for Erika, his wife, and his two small children that he has left behind. Eternal rest grant unto his soul, oh Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him.”

Kirk was delivering a talk and open debate hosted by his nonprofit political organization just right before the shooting. He was taking questions from the audience about mass shootings and violence.

The last question posed to Kirk was about a transgender gunman who killed two school children and injured 21 others at a Catholic church in Minneapolis.

“Do you know how many transgender Americans have been mass shooters over the last 10 years?” an audience member asked, according to AP. Kirk responded, “Too many.”

“Do you know how many mass shooters there have been in America over the last 10 years?” the questioner asked.

“Counting or not counting gang violence?” Kirk replied. Then a shot was fired. Kirk held his neck, as blood gushed.
