Up to 600 military lawyers are gearing up to act as provisional immigration judges to the Justice Department, according to the Associated Press.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth approved sending clusters of 150 attorneys — military and civilians — to the Justice Department “as soon as practicable” and the military services should have the first cycle of people identified by next week, according to the memo, dated Aug. 27.
Newsmax reported that the step is being done at the appeal of the DOJ, and the memo noted that the details will at first last no more than 179 days but can be renewable.
The Trump administration is considering an assortment of options to help put an end to the significant backlog of immigration cases, including hiring extra immigration judges. A Trump official said the matter should be “a priority that everyone — including those waiting for adjudication — can rally around.”
