TikTok, the popular, China-owned, social media video giant long suspected of being a security risk for the United States, is scheduled to be American owned soon, according to President Donald Trump.
The President approved the U.S.-TikTok agreement, signing an executive order on Sept. 25 that will concede China- grounded ByteDance 120 days to settle terms with American investors, according to The Epoch Times.
“We have American investors taking it over, running it,” Trump said. “We have very good controls.”
In 2024, the United States passed a law that required ByteDance, a foreign rival – run company, to rid itself of the well-liked social media app. Pursuant to the law, ByteDance will be limited to holding a stake of less than 20 percent in the new joint venture.
American investors will be provided by the transaction with a majority ownership in the joint venture along with six of seven board seats. The board members will have credentials with national security and cybersecurity, according to the White House—ByteDance can appoint one board member but that person can take no part in security-related measures.
Also, the U.S. government will not take a stake in the new joint venture and will not be appointing board members.
“This deal really does mean that Americans can use TikTok, but actually use it with more confidence than they had in the past,” Vice President JD Vance said. “Because their data is going to be secure and it’s not going to be used as a propaganda weapon against our fellow citizens.”
Vance’s office had been working on the commercial component of the deal beginning in the spring.
