Secret Service Takes Down Network Threatening Trump and U.N Officials in New York

The U.S. Secret Services dismantled a malevolent telecommunications network in New York that presented a serious menace to President Donald Trump, and other world leaders and diplomats who are convening at the U.N. General Assembly meetings this week.

The probe, conducted by the Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security and several other law enforcement forces unearthed 100,000 sim cards and 300 sim servers across five sites, according to a story by The Washington Times. The Secret Service said it was the biggest capture of its kind in the agency’s history.

The bust was important, according to investigators, because the illicit network of sites could send more than 30 million text messages per minute and eased encrypted and anonymous communications of malicious foreign actors and criminals.

The Secret Service said the sites could have been used to incapacitate cellphone towers, disturb communications among first responders by sending denial of service attacks, spy on private conversations and send anonymous menacing messages.

The operation was well-funded, could send text messages nationwide “within 12 minutes,” and had the potential to cripple New York City’s telecommunications system, said the Secret Service.

“The potential for disruption to our country’s telecommunications posed by this network of devices cannot be overstated,” Secret Service Director Sean Curran wrote. “The U.S. Secret Service’s protective mission is all about prevention, and this investigation makes it clear to potential bad actors that imminent threats to our protectees will be immediately investigated, tracked down and dismantled.”
