The Vice President and his wife met with families and victims of the Catholic school shooting perpetrated by a gunman who killed two children and injured 21 people in Minneapolis.
Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha Vance, met amidst heavy security with the families on Wednesday at Annunciation Catholic Church, the site of the tragedy. Vance converted to Catholicism in 2019 and is seen in many circles as the image and leader of the conservative-leaning Catholic movement.
Newsmax reported that once at the church, the Vances laid bouquets in front of a memorial before going to meet with the families. Nevertheless, some family and neighbors congregated across the street as the Vances arrived at the church, holding signs calling for bans on assault weapons. One read, “Pro-Life = Pro-Gun Safety.” Another read, “When you pray, move your feet,” a popular phrase from people who say thoughts and prayers are not enough.
“Nothing is happening,” said Kacie Sharpe, whose 8-year-old son, Trip, was sitting near one of the children who was killed. “And it keeps happening over and over and over — and nothing changes. And it’s the most helpless feeling in the world to know that you can’t send your kids to school and have them be safe.”

Still, the Vances did not make any public statements during the one hour and 45 minute visit to the church.
Robin Westman, 23, the shooter who was born with the name Robert Westman, committed suicide, but not before shooting 116 rounds at school children who were attending Holy Mass last Wednesday, according the authorities. Investigators said they have not found a clear motive for the shooting, but the perpetrator left behind a manifesto with alleged Satanic scribblings and considered himself transgender.
The school has not given a date for classes to start again or if and when a reconsecration ceremony will be held so that Holy Mass and the sacraments can once again be administered. Still, Annunciation church celebrated its Masses last weekend in the school gym.
