After the war, it’s over.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukraine’s leader said he would be prepared to step down after the war with Russia is over, in an interview published on Sept. 25, according to The Epoch Times.
In addition, the Ukrainian president said that if a permanent peace between both countries could be made, he would request elections and not run for reelection. Elections where scheduled to take place in 2024, but were canceled because the country was placed under martial law after Russia invaded the Ukraine in February 2022.
“If we finish the war with the Russians, yes, I am ready not to go [for elections] because it’s not my goal, elections,” Zelenskyy told Axios in a video interview.
“I wanted very much—in a very difficult period of time—to be with my country, help my country. My goal is to finish the war,” said.
Elected as the president of Ukraine in May 2019, Zelenskyy has now been in the post for more than a year beyond the five-year term limit for the office. Presidents in that country are only permitted two consecutive terms.
However, Zelenskyy has been criticized during his presidency by President Donald Trump. Russia has also blasted him, doubting his validity as a leader due to a lack of elections.
Still, Zelenskyy has maintained his approval numbers high in Ukraine during the war. A poll taken at the start of September by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology showed that about 59 percent of Ukrainians trusted their president.
