In the ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israeli forces, Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s Prime Minister ordered its army to immediately attack with “powerful strikes” in Gaza, testing the peace deal brokered by the U.S.

Netanyahu’s announcement came after Israel said that Hamas had opened fire at Israeli forces in southern Gaza, according to Newsmax.

Frictions were already on the edge after Hamas returned a set of remains that Israel said belonged to a body of an Israeli hostage recovered earlier in the war.

Israel’s Prime Minister called the return a “clear violation” of the ceasefire agreement, which obliges Hamas to return all Israeli hostage remains as soon as possible.

On Tuesday, Israeli airstrikes were reported during the evening in Gaza City after Israeli officials vowed to respond to an attack on troops in south Gaza and Hamas’s failure to return the bodies of hostages still held in the Strip.

According to The Times of Israel, there was no immediate comment from the Israel Defense Forces on the strikes, reported by Palestinian media, which came hours after Israeli troops stationed in southern Gaza’s Rafah came under fire by terrorists.

Israeli soldiers returned fire at the attackers, and Palestinian media also reported Israeli artillery shelling in the Rafah area. Hamas later denied involvement in the shooting.

Gaza’s civil defense agency said at least two people were killed and four were injured in an Israeli strike on the Sabra neighborhood south of Gaza City. Five others were reported killed in an Israeli airstrike targeting a car in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis.

The Times of Israel reported that the Associated Press reporters and witnesses heard tank fire and saw explosions in various parts of Gaza, including in Gaza City and Deir al-Balah. According to Palestinian reports, one of the strikes targeted an area near Gaza’s largest hospital, Shifa, with no casualties reported.
