Poll Shows Artificial Intelligence Will Push the American Dream Further Away for Many

People aren’t worried about robot masters ruling over them; they’re fretted about not being able to afford a house or pay their rent.

The much vaunted American dream that for centuries has enraptured the imagination of countless people has suddenly become even harder to reach, according to a new poll.

The reason? Artificial Intelligence.

According to a poll conducted by the Rainey Center, forty percent of American voters think AI will make attaining the American Dream even harder to grasp. That is more than double the 16% of voters who see AI as helpful.

According to a story published by The Daily Wire, this isn’t conjectural technophobia. This is a window into the deep angst many sense about economic security in a time when the traditional pathways to success already seem more and more out of reach.

The Rainey Center national poll of 2,011 likely voters shows an omnipresent glumness about artificial intelligence (AI), along with more profound worries about a rigged system.

Out of the respondents, 39% of them said about the future that AI makes them feel more suspicious, compared to 20% who said it makes them more optimistic.

This feeling of pessimism about AI is non-partisan. No matter the political affiliation, the respondents are equally worried about the future.

Republicans, Democrats and Independents all are concerned that a technological commotion will heighten rather than fix the challenges facing American families.

According to the Daily Wire, the fear isn’t that AI will form a different future — voters fear that AI will fast-track tendencies already making life harder. Young Americans today face a housing market detached from salary progress, with 21% of Gen Z citing housing as a top national challenge compared to just 6% of Boomers.

They’re fraught by education debt that earlier generations never faced. And now they’re being told that automation and AI may disrupt the very jobs they’re counting on to build their economic security.

In and of itself, the American Dream remains extraordinarily steady: financial stability and homeownership top the list across all demographics. But the gap between desire and reality has never been wider. Only 22% of voters believe they’ve achieved the American Dream, while 36% feel it’s completely out of reach. Among Millennials, 40% believe the dream is unattainable for them.
