In an ongoing effort to hold a peace truce between Hamas and Israel, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem on Thursday, according to Fox News.

Rubio followed a similar visit by Vice President JD Vance, who was there to make sure the peace deal made by President Donald Trump between Israel and Hamas remained, despite a seeming reluctance from both sides.

“This is a circle of trust and partnership. You’ve been an extraordinary friend of Israel,” Netanyahu said to Rubio, while also referencing US President Donald Trump’s speech in the Knesset earlier this month.

“Now we face days of destiny. We want to advance peace, we still have security challenges, but I think that we can work together, and by working together, both address the challenges and seize the opportunities, and plenty of both,” Netanyahu said.

Rubio, who was at his side during the press conference, said about Trump’s Israel-Gaza ceasefire accord: “We have more work ahead of us, but we feel very positive about it. We’ve been making good progress.”

“We’ve done the impossible once, intend to keep doing that”, Rubio added about the hard-fought peace agreement brokered by Trump and supported by the international community. “No one is under any illusions. We’ve already done the impossible once. And we intend to keep doing that. And we can.”

The fragile peace deal between Israel and Hamas has been recently put to the test since the armistice was signed during a historic event in Egypt. First, Hamas attacked and killed several Israeli soldiers, which was met with bombings from Israel—this week the Knesset, Israel’s legislative body voted to annex the West Bank, which was met with harsh criticism by Trump, Vance, and Rubio.

Still, Rubio said that Trump is ensuring the peace deal remained, well, peaceful, and is a “top priority…evidenced by the fact that both Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were here for much of the week and he spent time with them. And the Vice President [Vance] just left and then I’m here now, today, because this is a priority. It’s a very important achievement.”

“We feel very positive and confident that we’re going to get there, despite substantial obstacles. We’re going to get there,” Rubio concluded.
