In securing peace between Hamas and Israel, the first thing is to make sure the hostages are returned, Trump says.

Peace at last.
President Donald Trump is assuring everyone that with the war in Gaza over, Hamas will disarm and the Israeli military will retreat its armed forces. Still, he said the fine details of who will manage the area after the war is still being finalized, according to The Times of Israel.
“Last night, we reached a momentous breakthrough in the Middle East,” Trump said at the beginning of a cabinet meeting in the White House. “We ended the war in Gaza, and on a much bigger basis, created peace… hopefully an everlasting peace in the Middle East.”
Nevertheless, one of those who does not seem entirely convinced that the peace deal is over is the Israeli Prime Minister. Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly said that the end of the conflict can only be assured when Hamas hands over their weapons and Gaza has been completely demilitarized.
Still, the mediators seem ebullient about bringing peace, convincing Hamas to free the remaining 48 hostages. The peacemakers have promised them that they will not permit Israel to continue its attacks after the prisoners have been released.
The hostages have been imprisoned since Hamas attacked Israel in Oct. 2023.
Speaking to reporters, Trump was unclear about how or if the United States will make sure that Hamas will turn over their weapons or that Israel will not restart the hostilities. Instead, he said the priority now was to secure the freedom of the hostages.
Trump said, “Last night, we reached a momentous breakthrough in the Middle East, something that people said was never going to be done. We ended the war in Gaza, and really, on a much bigger basis, created peace.”
